1995 PORTRAIT OF HELMUT NEWTON
PORTRAITS OF HELMUT NEWTON (1995)
This known portrait of Helmut Newton was taken in 1995 during a TV Special on Helmut Newton with Télé Monte-Carlo (in the Principality of Monaco at Galerie Pierre Nouvion). Shabelewska was able to capture a rare image of Helmut Newton, the master of fashion photography, posing playfully in front of his work. The size difference between the artist and the photograph exposes the grandiose and fabulous side of Newton’s photos, while at the same time revealing a human and accessible side to this mythic figure. A tribute to a man who ennobled fashion photography, Shabelewska’s work immortalizes Newton, who passed away in 2004 in Los Angeles.
Born and raised in Monaco, Polish‐French-American Silas Shabelewska has practiced photography since the age of 14. At 16, she learned the process of silver gelatin printing. In 1984, Shabelewska enrolled at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where she majored in photography, film and video. Since the late 80’s, Shabelewska has worked predominantly in photography and has photographed art world personalities such as Leo Castelli and Helmut Newton (in Monte‐Carlo in 1995).
